I live near the Diamond Rock Club in Ahoghill, County Antrim, a fantastic venue that puts on a wide selection of musicians throughout the year.

Last weekend I had the great pleasure of seeing Eric Bell, one of my favourite guitarists, for the first time.

He co-founded Thin Lizzy with Phil Lynott in 1969 and wrote some legendary songs and guitar parts on their first 3 albums, including the opening riff to their version of the traditional Irish song "Whiskey in the Jar".

I really enjoyed the concert, which was the Eric Bell Trio. His trademark dynamic playing style on that old strat was demonstrated to the full.

I had the privilege of chatting to him after the set; he said his performances are all about self-expression these days.

That came through in abundance throughout the concert. He's uncompromising in what he plays - it's what he wants to play, right at that moment. If you go to his concert expecting to hear big hits from his time with Thin Lizzy (Whiskey in the Jar, The Rocker etc.) you may leave disappointed unless he happens to feel like playing it that night. What you will hear is a variety of classic blues, tasty celtic guitar lines, and his solo songs.

I regularly listen to his last two solo albums Exile (2015), and Standing at a Bus Stop (2017). And his 5-CD box set "Remembering - Anthology", which serves to demonstrate his wide repertoire.

Some quick snaps taken at the concert with my wee iPhone:

I will definitely see him again if I get the chance.

👉 You can catch him on tour in the coming weeks in Hull, Preston, Barnoldswick, London, and Birmingham. Tickets available here.

The Scots language and its slang are characterised by very expressive words and phrases.

Here's my wee explanation for each of the words/phrases used above:

Stoater: Something beautiful, extraordinarily nice. Example usage: "That's a stoater"

Scunnered: fed up. Example usage: "I'm fair scunnered"

Wheesht: be quiet, as in 'make yourself quiet' or 'silence yourself'. Example usage: "hud yer wheesht, min"

Taps aff: Take the clothing off the top half of your body.

Sleekit: Sly, sneaky, cunning. (Can also mean streamlined, if used to describe an object)

Peely-wally: feeling (or looking) off-colour, pale, sick

Blootered: very drunk

Ya beauty: Exclamation (usually loud) of joy about something excellent that's just been observed. A try scored against the English at a rugby match usually qualifies :)

Bampot: an idiot or foolish person, or a mad person

Aye right: I don't believe you.

Beamer: When a person's face blushes (goes red) with embarrassment they're said to have a beamer

Glaikit: someone that is stupid or foolish, or sometimes someone that's acting without thought, or someone that's a bit eccentric.

Gallus: someone that's being bold or daring, often in a mischievous way. The sentence before or after commonly contains the word 'blootered' (see above).

Drookit: very wet, drenched

Crabbit: Very grumpy, or bad-tempered

Wabbit: exhausted, very tired, no energy left

If you're interested in learning more about the Scots language, and seeing a Scots 'word of the week', I recommend the Dictionaries of Scots Language.

I grew up in the North East of Scotland where The Doric, a Scots dialect, is more commonly used. You can read more about that dialect here, and download an excellent guide with examples of common usage from the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.

I first came across her on YouTube - can't remember what I was searching for - it was probably Linux-related. I immediately warmed to her personality, funny jokes, encouragement, and proper geekness. I subscribe to her channel.

In her own words:

Some folks call me the Linux Mom, and that works for me. I'm a sysadmin and COBOL lady who's posting fun content about cool things you can do with Linux, as well as some fun retro tech stuff I come across!

Anyhoo, I'm writing about her as she's just moved to a new website domain, and you might want to check it out, or her excellent videos like this one:

Also, this is my first post on this relaunched website, and it's a lot more interesting than "test post".
